Let’s Talk About Truth

January 15

John 8:31-32
“Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

I want to propose that If Jesus is who He says He is then we need to take His word very seriously and literally. We are set free by knowing The Truth, not a truth. In the times we live there are so many truths being spoken and followed but as each man does what is right in his own eyes we ignore the simple fact that there is a standard called “The Truth” which does not change, how could it change and still be true? The world we live in revises their standards and values constantly. How can this be? Truth cannot be altered, if it can then obviously it was not true to begin with.

Dictionary.com gives the following definition of Truth:
1. The true or actual state of a matter:
2. Conformity with fact or reality; verity: the truth of a statement.
3. A verified or indisputable fact, proposition, principle, or the like: mathematical truths.
4. The state or character of being true.
5. Actuality or actual existence.
6. An obvious or accepted fact; truism; platitude.
7. Honesty; integrity; truthfulness.

So if we are set free by the Truth then that would suggest that when we do not have or know the truth that we are actually not free meaning we are in bondage. What are we in bondage too? Those things that are not true obviously, we call those untrue things Lies. So, we have a society with constantly changing values revising their truths based upon today’s circumstances and trends but those values are not truth, they are lies and those who prescribe to those values are in bondage to those lies.

The solution is we need to know the truth. It is in knowing the truth that we are set free from the bondage to the lies. Jesus said of Himself “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me”. John 14:6.

So now we have a new ingredient. Jesus claims to be not just truth but “The Truth” leaving room for no other truths. His statements are extremely exclusive in that He says No One comes to Father God unless it is through Him. I looked up the definition of No one and it means No One. In case you are thinking that there may be another way to get to God by going around Jesus notice that HE said He is “the Way and the Life”. There are no Truths other than Him, There is no Way but through Him and there is no Life without Him.

Some More About Truth

John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

Jesus is praying to the Father God in this passage for His disciples and HE asks God to “Sanctify” them through Truth. We don’t use the word sanctify much anymore so here is a quick definition:

  1. To make holy; set apart as sacred; consecrate.
    2. To purify or free from sin: Sanctify your hearts.
    3. To impart religious sanction to; render legitimate or binding: to sanctify a vow.
    4. To entitle to reverence or respect.
    5. To make productive of or conducive to spiritual blessing.

Notice Freedom mentioned in point 2. Jesus finishes by saying that Gods Word Is Truth. Remember we will Know The Truth and The Truth will set us free. Not Just any Truth or A Truth but it is The Truth that can free us. Now we know that Jesus said He is The Truth and in reading these passages I am so amazed at how intricately Gods word is all woven together so that each part rests upon and support each other part. Jesus is the Truth which sets us free but Gods word is truth so what is the connection between Jesus and the Word since they are both Truth?

John 1:

1 In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He existed in the beginning with God. 3 God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. 4 The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone.

5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. 6 God sent a man, John the Baptist, 7 to tell about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony. 8 John himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light. 9 The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

10 He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him. 11 He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. 12 But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. 13 They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.

14 So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.
15 John testified about him when he shouted to the crowds, “This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘Someone is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’”

John tells us in great detail with the opening of his account of his experience with Jesus that the very Word of God is a person and he reveals that person as being the only son of God. Jesus is the Word. As we come to know Jesus and become familiar with the written scriptures we are made free. Freedom is worth pursuing. Know the Word of God and you will know the God of the Word and you will be set free
